Short Story
I could feel heavy sweats on my forehead. Rolling down, touching my cheekbones. Slowly, dripping from the chin. Tonight was hot, I whispered to myself while standing directly under an air-conditioner.
I wore a new suit. And this black necktie strangling my neck.
I looked around me. People were everywhere. The girls dressed up nicely. Some were wearing dresses, while some were fine chilling in their jeans. The boys were laughing out loud. I couldn't sense anything funny. I could only feel my own heartbeat, faster than usual. I needed to get out of here. I could only think of the back door of this hall. Maybe I could sneak out through it, no one would ever notice me. But, to get to the back door I needed to get through this crowd of people.
"I hate this, I hate crowds,"
I closed my eyes. Trying to shut off the world in front of me. My head started to feel dizzy. The voices were too loud. I was losing control. Could no longer feel the ground. At this moment I swore I could fall to the floor anytime. God, please help me.
"Hey,"
Someone hugged my right arm, tight.
"I'm sorry I left for too long,"
"Nadya was talking to me. You know her, once she opens her mouth,"
She looked at me. We both chuckled, thinking about our best friend Nadya who talks way too much. Somehow I could feel my heartbeat slowly become calmer. I finally could take a deep breath, holding her hand tight.
She looked into my eyes and beamed.
"You okay?"
Both of her hands moved to tighten her grip on my arm. I nodded.
"Yeah, better now that you're here,"
She smiled again.
"Give me your glass,"
I handed her my unfinished soda. She gulped it at once.
"Refreshing! I love to help you finish your drinks!"
She pulled my arm, swaying in her golden dress.
"Come on, let's dance!"
Suddenly the crowd disappeared. I could walk through those people, only by looking at her.
I knew it. Coming to this party wasn't that bad. I didn't care much about people around me, I had this woman with me, guiding me closely, loving me gently.
