Short Story

"I'll come over,"
"Oh, okay,"

She hung up the phone. Slowly, her right hand touched her aching chest.

Went into the kitchen, she sat down. Looking everything before her eyes, but her mind wandered off somewhere else.

"What would you like?"

He smiled while thinking for a while.

"Hmm, what about...a homemade pizza?Chicken pepperoni?"

She struck him her surprised look. They both laughed.
He was too demanding, but I loved him anyway.

"Okay! But promise me you would come over?"

Again, he smiled that angelic smile.

"Promise,"

She sighed. Opened the two door refrigerator.
She was preparing dough, for a chicken pepperoni pizza.

Two years abroad, now he told me he wanted to see me out of the blue.
Was he a man of his words?

She shook her head. Seemed like she couldn't answer that to her own self.

That pizza took about an hour and half of her time. She walked out of the kitchen, went into the store room. There, she sat down. Again, her mind was somewhere else, far away in the past.

"I'd like it if our house is full of flowers,"

Placing her head on knees, she looked at him, out of love.

"Really?What flowers?"

He turned to his right, to face her. Smiled.

"What about...blue irises?"

She burst into a laugh. He seemed so puzzled.

"What?What's wrong with it?"
"Hahaha! Okay! You need to make a lot of money for us to buy those flowers every month!"

He smiled, every smile of his was angelic-like. And so lovely. Her heart skipped a beat.

"Okay, sure,"

She sighed, looking at blue irises in every vase in the store room, which were already dead. She knew she had to buy new ones. Off to the nursery.

She decorated the house with love. And fear. With everything he had ever said he loved. Blue irises were everywhere. The dining table had a blue plastic cover on it. The chicken pepperoni pizza was on the table-top.

She waited for him to show up. With love. And fear. Just like how she had waited for his call every night two years ago. Just like how she had waited for him to show up every summer break as he told her he would do so, two years ago. But he did never call. He did never show up.

Just like how she had lost faith in him, the chicken pepperoni went cold. Seemed like the blue irises would be dead again at the end of the month, like her heart two years ago when he told her to break up.

"Hey, it's me,"

Her heart was back from dead. It started to beat, and skipped so many beats so soon.

"I've finished studying, you know, last month,"
"And I'll be married soon, about next 2 months,"
"My mom told me to give you my card so,"
"I'll come over,"

Her knees were trembling. She tried to hold on to everything she ever had.

"Oh, okay,"

Realising everything she had done for him on that day, she cried a silent cry. It was a long one, on a rainy day.
