Short Story

"Where are you going after this, Seth?"

His green eyes were searching for the voice. It's his best friend, Ryan. The best drummer in the school.

"Library, I guess,"

Ryan laughed. He rested his hand on Seth's shoulder.

"It's not that final is around any corner man, hang out with us,"
"Leigh wrote a new song, we're going to make it work this time,"

Seth could only smile a line.

"My mom would love me to go for library,"
"See you guys later, then,"

He waved goodbye in the air. Ryan knew him so well. His mom was his everything.

**

Seth was doing his Chemistry work, when he suddenly saw an angel walk past him.

That blonde hair looked so attractive. And those eyes. And, that piercing on her pink lips.

That's..rare. Rare, and beautiful.

That girl walked out of the library. Seth stood up to take a look at the book she just left on the shelf. Pablo Neruda, The Sea and The Bells.

So she's into this kind of book huh. Sweet.

**

Weeks went by. Seth found out that the girl he secretly adored had dropped out of school recently.

"I'm thinking of dropping out, you see,"

His friends stopped eating. Ryan accidentally dropped his spoon. Everyone was looking at Seth.

"What?!"

"Seth is this you?!!"

"Alien has invaded Seth's brain!!!"

**

They were sitting on the couch in Leigh's room.

"Before we go on with the rest of the issue,"
"Seth Wilson, when did you get that piercing on your lips?"

"And what's wrong with that ripped jeans?"

"And now you're talking about colouring your hair green?!"

"Are you freaking kidding your mom, Seth?!"

Seth could only sigh. I never thought they would react like this.

"Look, guys, I like this girl,"
"I met her at the library weeks ago, and it was love at first sight,"

Seth started to tell his best friends everything. How he liked the way she smiled, walked, talked, dressed up. Everything about her.

And how she coloured her hair and pierced her lips.

"So you want to leave the school because she's a drop out?!"

Leigh suddenly screamed. Seth could only nod. Not wanting to worsen the whole thing. Well, it was already the worst.

"Okay, I won't drop out. I'm just going to skip a few classes,"
"Come on guys, I need your support?"

Leigh, Ryan and Isaac looked at one another. They knew that this time, Seth really needed it.

**

"I skipped Biology this morning and went to the town,"
"And guess what,"

Leigh raised his eyebrows. Ryan shook his head, telling them he couldn't guess. Isaac on the other hand raised his shoulders, showing he also didn't know what to guess.

"I found her! And talked to her!"

**

"Now he's become a liar,"

"A perfect one,"

"And wild,"

The three of them leaved out a heavy sigh. The heaviest, for these past few years. The last time they did when Seth didn't want to go to school as he couldn't let go of his mom's hand.

"Is she that good? To make Seth change,"
"To someone who's no longer our Seth?"

Isaac shook his head.

"I heard she's quite good, but seeing Seth like this makes me think she's not any better,"

"It's not her fault that Seth became like this. It's his choice,"
"But let me tell you guys, she's out of reach,"

They all knew it; the fact that Seth was trying so hard for someone who's unreachable, and different from him.

**

Ryan screamed in shock when he suddenly saw Seth in his drum room.

"What are you doing here late at night Seth?! What's with those drumsticks?!"

Seth smiled at him.

"Teach me how to drum, Ryan,"

Ryan rolled his eyes while being confused. As far as he knew, Seth wasn't into drumming. All his life was only guitar, and piano.

"First of all, I need to sleep. Second of all, what has got into you Seth? I thought you only agree to be the guitarist of this band? I'm the drummer? We don't need a second drummer,"
"Well, yet,"

Seth sighed as he leaved the room. He sat on Ryan's cold bed.

"Abigail told me she's into drummer,"
"But I only play guitar,"

Ryan felt like exploding. Not again. Not Abigail again.

**

"Let him be, Ryan,"

"Soon he will feel tired too, from all of these,"

Ryan nodded his head. That's all he could do after all.

**

Seth laid on his bed after a long day. Of chasing. He touched the piercing on his lips.

And thought about his grades that had been dropping since the first time he skipped his classes.

And his mom, who was hiding the fact that she was actually sad to see him like this.

And his best friends, and the band. Who had lost their guitarist. And the real Seth Wilson.

"Does love make you try so hard you're no longer you?"

He just mumbled to himself.

"Well, I don't think it's love,"

Seth jumped out of his bed to see his mom at the door of his room. Mrs. Wilson smiled at him.

"Well, I don't think it is either,"

**

He didn't see Abigail since that night. When he talked to his mom about all of the struggles he went through just to make Abigail liked him, the way he had been feeling for her.

Seth admitted he was tired. Tired of not being himself. What's the point if she liked him back, if that Seth wasn't him, and he wasn't being himself?

"Beyond zero,"
"The point is beyond zero and all of the negative values,"

"Ryan is saying it's all useless,"

Leigh pat his back, gently.

"It's okay man, you tried your best,"

"You tried so hard,"

Seth smiled.

"But I wasn't being me,"

Seth didn't want to perceive it as his first love. It hurt him to try so hard to be someone else. It's not love if she couldn't accept him without the piercing, ripped jeans, green hair, and all that.

It's not love if she couldn't accept Seth for who he is.
